The Kind of Love That Doesn’t Give Up
Have you ever lost something that meant everything to you? A wedding ring, an heirloom, a treasured gift? If so, you remember the panic, the relentless search, and the joy when it was finally found. That’s the exact kind of love Jesus says God has for you.
In a short but profound parable found in Luke 15:8-10, Jesus tells the story of a woman who loses one coin from her set of ten. To most of us, that might not sound like much. But for her, it was everything. It may have been part of a wedding dowry, possibly worn as a headdress, something precious both emotionally and financially. Losing it would’ve felt like losing a piece of her identity.
So she lights a lamp, sweeps every corner of her dark house, and listens closely for the faint sound of metal against dirt. And when she finds it? She throws a party.
Jesus says that is what God is like.
Not About a Coin. About You.
Let’s be clear. This parable isn’t really about a coin.
It’s about people. It’s about you. It’s about the heart of God that beats with unwavering love for those who feel far away. Whether you’ve wandered off, been pushed out, or simply feel unseen, Jesus is saying, God sees you. You are worth finding. And He will not stop until you are.
In the context of the story, Jesus is eating with people who were labeled as immoral and unworthy. These were the ones the religious leaders refused to even associate with. But Jesus? He sat at their table and shared meals with them. And shared the truth with them.
Because the truth is this, God’s love is not reserved for the already-good. It’s extended to the searching, the struggling, and the lost.
The Real Problem With Religion
Jesus’ audience included Pharisees, religious experts who had built walls instead of bridges. Their philosophy was simple: don’t associate with sinners. Don’t even try to bring them back. Just write them off.
But Jesus didn’t see people that way.
He tells this story as a rebuke to that mindset, saying in effect, You’ve missed the heart of God. Because God’s love doesn’t draw boundaries to exclude people, it goes searching for them.
And when one person, just one, turns back to Him, heaven rejoices. That’s how much you matter to God.
God’s Love in Real Life
It’s easy to hear stories like this and keep them abstract. But think about it. Have you ever lost something important, something that made your stomach drop when you realized it was missing?
One recent story shared in the sermon was about a woman who thought she had lost her wedding ring at church. The search began immediately. Every hallway, every room, every crevice was checked. Eventually, it turned up inside a bag. It had slipped off due to cold fingers. And there was relief. Celebration. Texts with exclamation points.
That, but even more, is what Jesus says happens in heaven when you return to Him. That’s God’s love on full display. Not passive. Not indifferent. Relentless, personal, and full of joy.
Two Things We Need to Understand
1. If you’re a Christian: Don’t act like the Pharisees.
It’s not your job to decide who is too far gone. It is your job to share the hope you’ve found in Jesus. That’s what love does. It offers, invites, and welcomes. Charles Spurgeon once said, “To be a soul winner is the happiest thing in the world.” And he was right. Every story of someone coming to faith becomes a little taste of heaven on earth.
2. If you’re not yet following Jesus: You are not forgotten.
God has not given up on you. He hasn’t stopped searching. In fact, He’s drawing near. Right now. All you have to do is acknowledge your need, repent, and trust Him. The moment you do, heaven celebrates. Not because you got it all together, but because you chose to come home.
The Value of the Found
At the end of this short parable, Jesus drives the point home.
“There is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15:10)
So don’t dismiss your story as unimportant. Don’t believe the lie that God is indifferent. He’s not. He is the one lighting the lamp, sweeping the house, and listening intently for the sound of your return.
God’s love isn’t cautious. It’s all in.
