When God Answers but You’re Not Ready

What Happens When God Finally Answers?

That was the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth. This couple had served God faithfully. They were upright, obedient, and prayerful. But they were also barren. And in their culture, that meant more than just personal grief—it meant social shame.

They had likely prayed for years. But by the time the angel Gabriel showed up, it seemed they had stopped expecting an answer.

When the angel delivered the message that Zechariah’s prayer had been answered, his response was not joy. It was doubt.

“How can I be sure of this?” he asked. That’s not the voice of someone expectant. That’s the voice of someone deeply disappointed.

When You’re on Spiritual Cruise Control

Zechariah had done everything right—on the outside. He kept praying, showing up for his priestly duties, following all the religious expectations.

But when God showed up in power, he wasn’t ready. His heart had settled into unbelief.

That’s a warning for us too.

When we keep following traditions but stop expecting God to move, we miss what He’s doing. We become so used to the disappointment that even if He responds, we don’t believe it’s possible anymore.

    What About You?

In those moments when you face disappointment, how do you respond?

    ● Do you meet God’s silence with cynicism?

    ● Do you hear His Word with skepticism?

    ● Do you pray but quietly doubt that anything will change?

The question isn’t if you’ll face disappointment. It’s how you’ll respond when you do.

God’s Plan Was Always in Motion

Even when it felt like silence, God had not forgotten Zechariah and Elizabeth. His plan had a purpose. Their son, John, would be the forerunner of the Messiah. His name itself—John—means “God is gracious.”

God hadn’t ignored their prayers. He had aligned them with the perfect moment in history.

The same is true for us.

What seems like a delay is divine design. What feels empty might be the space God is preparing to fill. What feels like rejection could be a redirection to something greater.

Are You Ready to Receive What God Has for You?

Zechariah responded with doubt. Elizabeth responded with praise. Same miracle. Different response.

That’s the challenge. Our ability to receive God’s answer is directly tied to how we respond in seasons of waiting.

If we’ve allowed bitterness or disbelief to settle into our hearts, we may not recognize God’s answer when it comes.

    Cruise-Control Christianity Is a Risk

Many of us, myself included, have experienced seasons where spiritual life drifts into maintenance mode. We pray out of habit, read Scripture with minimal expectation, and worship with hearts distracted by routine or disappointment.

But that’s not faith. That’s spiritual fatigue disguised as faithfulness.

Zechariah had everything checked off—temple duties, traditions, and prayers. But when the miracle came, he wasn’t spiritually alert enough to believe.

God’s Faithfulness Is Never in Question

The wonder of this story isn’t that God finally responded. It’s that He had a plan all along. Even before Zechariah and Elizabeth prayed, God knew what He would do.

    That’s the beauty of trust.

Disappointment can become fertile ground for deeper dependence—if we let it. Or it can become a trap that leads us away from the passionate pursuit of God.

    How Will You Respond?

Let’s bring this home with three personal questions:

    1. How Have I Responded to Disappointment?

Have I allowed long seasons of unanswered prayer to erode my faith? Have I stopped expecting God to do anything new?

It’s time to reflect and repent if we’ve let disbelief take root.

    2. Am I Living on Cruise Control Spiritually?

Have I been going through the motions? Attending church. Checking boxes. But not engaging my heart?

If I’m not actively pursuing God’s presence, I may miss His power when it comes.

    3. Am I Ready to Receive What God Has for Me?

God may be closer than we realize. Are you ready to receive?

If He answered your prayer today, would you recognize it? Would you believe it? Would you respond with faith?

    Let the Response Begin Now

The birth of John the Baptist was the beginning of God’s renewed work among His people. He wasn’t just answering a couple’s longing. He was preparing the way for Jesus.

That’s how God works. He answers individual prayers within the context of His larger plan. He cares about your longing. But He’s also aligning it with His redemptive story.

This season, ask yourself: Is my heart awake? Am I ready?

Because what God promises, He always fulfills.
